Put the kitten in the bathroom, NOT a bedroom, as follows:
Put the carrier in the bathroom. Set up a litter box.
Dry food filled to the top, as well as bottled or RO water. NO tap water, bottled or RO water only.
DO not expect them to eat the first night.
Open the door to the carrier and let the kitten out with the bathroom door shut. This is his/her hidey hole. It makes them feel safe.
Why the bathroom? In any other room, they can run and hide under furniture, and you will prolong the bonding process.
Do NOT let the kitten out of the bathroom until they have bonded with you, meaning it willingly comes to you and wants your attention. When you are in the bathroom with the kitten, DO NOT try to grab the kitten to pet it. You will just scare it, and the bonding process will take longer!!
Do not introduce it to any other pet until you have reached this point.
When the kitten is bonded to you, then it is time to introduce it to your other pets. Put the kitten in a carrier and let the other animals in the room and sniff. This will let them meet without any fighting. After a short time, reverse the process with your pet in the carrier and the kitten on the outside.
Feed a good quality wet and dry food. There are many on the market. We feed our kittens Royal Canin Kitten Food, and they seem to like it. Royal Canin has many different foods for the different stages of a cat’s life.
I am sending along the dry food they are eating. Mix it in with the food you plan on feeding. Do not switch their food all at once or they WILL get the runs.
They should have dry food all the time. DO NOT DIET KITTENS!!!!!
Give the kitten wet food morning and night only. Start with a tablespoon. If they eat it, give them more. If they have not eaten them within 10 minutes, put it in the refrigerator, then try again in the evening.
They tend to be dry food eaters as adults, but as kittens, they should have as much as they want.
If you have any questions or problems, CALL ME FIRST! Most vets are not pure breed specialists and do not know these cats.
Do not spay or neuter your kitten until at least 30 days after they have come home. Why? The move is very stressful to a kitten and will depress its immune system. Since you pick up more illnesses at medical facilities, you do not want them exposed to sick cats with their immune systems suppressed.
I am sending Doxycycline home with you in powder form. If it sneezes, coughs, has eye issues, etc., CALL ME FIRST. You will fill the bottle with RO/bottled water to the fill line. Shake well. Give the kitten ½ cc twice a day for 10 days. Refrigerate and shake well before each use. It tastes bad and is very gritty. They will gag and choke and froth, but they are fine.
The dry food should be mixed with the following nutraceuticals: Xtra Bloom Digest-Aid, Super Lysine, and Xtra Bloom C1. You should get these nutraceuticals BEFOREthe kitten comes home.
Put these on the wet and dry food, approx. 1/8th teaspoon each mixed in.
They can be purchased from www.bloomproductsllc.com(formerly kittybloom.com).
The kitten should be kept on theses at least until adulthood. They can be kept on them indefinitely, as all of our cats are. They are great for the digestive system and immune system.
DO NOT immediately take your kitten to a vet to “introduce them”. As stated above, there are a lot of sick animals in a vet’s office, and your kitten’s immune system is suppressed (see above).
When the time comes, usually around 7 months old, take your kitten to a neuter/spay clinic. Why not a regular vet? 1) They are about 70-80% less expensive than a vet. 2) That’s ALL THEY DO, so they’re very good at it. 3) There will be no ill animals around for them to contract an infection.
Our kittens are not released until they are 16 weeks old, give or take a week. We reserve the right to send the kitten home sooner or later, depending on their weight and general maturity level.
Yes. However, realize that we are selling the cats that we do not feel would be competitive in a cat show. This does not mean it cannot be shown, but it may not do very well at a show. They can be shown in the Household Pet division, if you so choose, and the competition is somewhat less, since they are judged on behavior, cleanliness and how much they suck up to the judges!
1. Get 3 litter pans. Fill each with one inch of litter. Stack up. Every two or three days, remove the top tray, take it outside and dump it.
2. Clean the litter pan with bleach water and leave outside to air dry.
3. Why bother? It’s not what is in the box that permeates a house. It’s the box. People use clumping litter and liners, etc. They think this is cleaning the pan. Liners get torn, clumping litter does not get it all. Therefore, the plastic of the pan absorbs the urine. This is what people smell when they enter your home. By taking a few minutes every couple of days to clean the boxes, your house will never smell of cat.
4. Obviously, you can do as you wish in regards to maintaining litter. This method reduces cost (regular clay litter is relatively cheap for WalMart Special Kitty 20 lb bag). “Self Cleaning” litter boxes are expensive, and they only remove what is in the litter, they do not clean the box.
